Lyons 25 Note (G-G) Bell Set with Case Review
So it's not really a xylophone, just a cute glockenspiel. the blue picture bell set is not what I got, I got something much cuter when I ordered this, it was primary colors with two cute yellow plastic mallets. The sound is beautiful. My husband can play modified version of supermario brothers theme song, because apparently you need more notes to play it properly. My kids like playing it, but frankly I bug my hubby to play star wars theme music and super mario brothers, because he's good at playing this instrument and the real thing works compared to the baby toy version.Get more detail about Lyons 25 Note (G-G) Bell Set with Case.

Bass Grooves: Develop Your Groove and Play Like the Pros in Any Style Book/CD (Softcover) Best Quality
Absolutely brilliant. Being a percussionist with piano skills, who has been playing bass lines his whole life... on the piano, and who has been meddling with some classic guitar playing recently, I adore the way this book is "constructed". The very firm link Mr. Friedman has established between drums and bass is very important too: the very first chapter is not about bass playing, but about programming a drum computer in order to provide the missing part of any groove. The bass player and the drummer are twins, no doubt, and in this book that aspect is really glueing together the whole thing. That being said, the comments, and of course the choice of styles are excellent as well, as is the double notes/tab notation. An absolute must for anybody wishing to extend his or her knowledge of harmony, bass lines and accompaniment to this instrument, and probably for the regular bass guitar student as well (clearly, I'm not that regular, coming from a different background). Together with this book, I also ordered Friedman's Blues Bass - A Guide to the Essential Styles and Techniques: Hal Leonard Bass Method Stylistic Supplement (Book & CD), which I'm playing through right now, and his Building Walking Bass Lines (Bass Instruction). Great stuff. Love it. AND the instrument, too.Get more detail about Bass Grooves: Develop Your Groove and Play Like the Pros in Any Style Book/CD (Softcover).

Alfred's Basic Piano Library: Technic Book Level 1B Buy Now
I would call myself a beginner piano teacher, as I play the piano myself but have had no instruction as to how to teach others to play. I now have four beginner students, whom I have been teaching for a little over a year.
I love the Alfred method. The four books: technic, lesson, solo/recital, and theory all seem to really work well together. The songs coordinate with each other, so for each new concept taught in the lesson books, the student has a warm-up, a solo piece, and some theory work to back it up. I find this to be very effective. It gives the students a chance to see several examples of each concept, and practice each new concept in different ways until they achieve perfection with it. It also really walks the teacher through each concept very clearly, giving definitions for musical terms and clear instructions for which songs go together. I feel like the order in which concepts are taught also makes a lot of sense.
Overall, it's a good method for a teacher who doesn't know a whole lot about HOW to teach another person to play the piano!
I currently have some of my students on this level (1B), and others on the Prep Course levels. I love how all of the different levels are interchangeable, so gifted students can advance more quickly, and students who need a little extra reinforcement can stay on the lower levels. The map for how this all works is on the back of all of the books, which you can see on the book preview. So many great things about Alfred!Get more detail about Alfred's Basic Piano Library: Technic Book Level 1B.

Lowest Price Wagner's Ring: Turning the Sky Round
This well known and fascinating little book by M. Owen Lee contains a wealth of thought-provoking insights into Wagner's 'Ring', perhaps the most monumental work of art in human history. As Lee observes, 'The Ring' uses "external nature to tell us about our inner selves...it takes place outside of time, in the human imagination and memory. On the landscape of your soul, as you listen." It is about evolution, writes Lee, but is "as far in advance of Darwin's theory than myth has always been in advance of science."
To give an example of Lee's insight, he points out the similarities between the opening scene of 'Das Rhinegold' and the 'Forest Murmurs' scene from 'Siegfried', with the forest taking the place of the water as a symbol of the unconscious. The song of the woodbird even echoes the same melody as that of the Rhine Maidens. I must have been blind not to see this before Lee pointed it out! It's so obvious!
Lee is to be congratulated for writing such a deep and philosophical, yet highly accessible book. From reading reviews of opera DVDs on Amazon, it would appear that most lovers of classical music these days no longer wish to understand music with their blood. To them it is just beautiful, highly sophisticated sound, but with no deeper meaning. Wagner would have despised these soulless cretins, or 'cultured philistines' as Nietzsche called them.
Although Lee's interpretation of Wagner becomes too 'psychological' at times, rather than spiritual (even stooping to Freudian theories in a couple of places), it IS fasincating to learn that Siegfried's maturation process matches EXACTLY the three archetypal forces Jung held that a male must face before achieving wholeness (i.e. the attainment of the Self - and after Siegfried has faced these forces, he must then confront Wotan, who tells him "I am your Self").
All of the musical Leitmotifs in the Ring can be divided into two categories: those connected with unconscious nature, and those connected with conscious man. The opening song of the Rhine maidens ("Weia, Waga! Woge du Welle," etc.) can be seen as a kind of 'baby talk', where consciousness arises from the depths and learns to order things for the first time. The Rhinegold itself is the light of consciousness, hidden in the dark waters of the unconscious. With the light of consciousness comes the free choice between what is good and what Father Lee calls 'evil', although Nietzscheans may prefer 'degenerative' or some similar word. Alberich "steals away the golden eye and uses it for evil", yet "a noble, unforgettable theme" sounds when he does so. Lee thinks this is because although "the wresting of consciousness from nature is associated with guilt, the step had to be taken if the human race was to break its bond with mothering nature, the bond that kept it unaware, unthinking, merely intuitive like the animals." This breaking away brought with it knowledge, but also the awareness of death.
In Lee's interpretation Wotan's sacrifice of an eye gives him perfect outward vision, but means he can't see inwardly into his own soul. This is where Brünnhilde comes in. The ending signifies "the transformation of Brünnhilde, Wotan's Wiile (will), into what the whole of Wagner's Ring is striving to create - a new world. It is Wotan's will that the world of Wille (will) be destroyed and transformed into something newer and purer."
The ending of the Ring is not a "return to the beginning", it is a transformation. If it was a return, then Wagner would have brought it back to its original key of E flat, but instead after "a series of awe-inspiring chord progressions", it ends in D flat. So the consciousness of Wotan yields to "the next evolutionary development in human nature." As to what that development will be, Lee's guess is as good as yours or mine.
No Wagnerian should miss out on this book, which also contains an annotated list of further reading, and transcriptions of the most significant musical motifs in the cycle.Get more detail about Wagner's Ring: Turning the Sky Round.
Low Price Rise Up Singing: The Group Singing Songbook (Vocal)
My husband previously had a copy of this book and lent it to a friend of ours who was learning to play guitar. The friend had a house fire and the book was destroyed in the fire. I purchased this for him to replace his original. He plays the guitar and this book contains the music to many songs that we both know. We belong to a little group that meets and plays folk music and I notice that others in the group also have this book. Amongst us old hippies it's a favorite! There are many songs that you might know the first verse of like This Land is Your Land, but do you know verses 2,3,and 4? I didn't think so.Get more detail about Rise Up Singing: The Group Singing Songbook (Vocal).

Discount Rico - Bb Clarinet #2.0 - Box of 10
There are a lot of good reviews about reeds and Rico reeds specifically. Instead of just telling you how good the Rico #2 reed is I will give a review and address questions about reeds in general. First is what reed do you use first? If you are already playing then you probably already know that answer. If you are a professional then you have that answer too. If you are just beginning then this will help you. I went to Rico themselves and spoke with an expert so I could give you the information you needed. Personally, the Rico #1 1/2 is a great place to start as one reviewer has already mentioned. If you played before, put your clarinet away and are starting back as I am. I used to use a 3 1/2 Mitchell Lurie which is made by Rico as the expert told me. Then there is the new Plasticover reeds which are made with both cane and plastic and they taste terrible...YUCK!...lol. The plastic reeds are great for the outside such as marching band. I wish I had them when I was in the marching band 30 years ago. So what do you do when there are so many types out there. One reviewer mentioned the Rico 2 is a good place to start and I would agree, but if you are beginning start with a 1 1/2 it will be easier to blow air through and one other thought I bet you didn't know was that Benny Goodman, very famous playing the clarinet used a 1 1/2. I would also tell you not to buy too many and remember because you may not be able to send them back for hygiene purposes. In the Rico family they start with the regular Rico, then Royal, Reserve, Select Jazz, Grand Concert, for outside the Plasticover. Remember all of those words had Rico in front of them. They also go up in cost the better the reed is. That brings me to my next thought. Reeds are very personal. It depends on what you are playing, Marching band, Classical, or Jazz. What kind of tone you want. My recommendation is to try them all if you can and with that you will find the reed that you like. Rico also makes the Mitchell Lurie as I stated and the Mitchell Lurie Premium. The Vandoren reed is just like the regular Rico reed according the expert I was speaking of. I personally have not tried the Vandoren Reed. I suppose I will in the future just to see for myself. I hope this has helped and not made things too confusing. Buy the fewest you can and if it is for school band the Regular Rico Reed 1 1/2 or 2 is just fine and as you get better you can be overwhelmed just as I was with all the other reeds out there. Good Luck and enjoy the beauty of music. Let me know if I can help further and feel free to check out my other reviews and many are about the clarinet and in video too.Get more detail about Rico - Bb Clarinet #2.0 - Box of 10.

Cheapest Ashes of American Flags
I've had this DVD for a while and only watched it once. I saw Wilco in Savannah (3/25/2010) and have been watching Jeff since the Uncle Tupelo days. Wilco in its current incarnation is now probably the finest touring American band and having just watched this DVD again it really does a great job of capturing the concert experience, picking some excellent performances of Wilco favorites. What really makes this great is the backdrop of small-ish (OK, DC's not that small) American towns, and how it impacts the music. You get to see backstage vignettes showing what the band goes through to put on close to 3 hour shows night after night. Very highly recommended for even the most casual of Wilco fans.Get more detail about Ashes of American Flags.

Buy Korg KDM-2 True Tone Advanced Digital Metronome
This is the first metronome I have owned. Now I realize I really should have gotten one years ago. I feel like it is already helping me stay on tempo more consistently.
I can't make comparisons with other models but this one seems to be PLENTY LOUD with different choices of the type of click you desire, and with the headphone jack output, you can listen to it through earbuds or feed it into a monitor system in a band setting. Many times our band tends to speed up the tempo, even if only slightly, during a song...this helps you lock in what the tempo should be when you are practicing.
The controls are pretty straight forward and easy to use except for the TEMPO CONTROL WHEEL. Gee, the only reason I can think of for this engineering oversight is that it fits in a box better? It would work ok if the resistance on the wheel was less. But from the box, you pretty much have to use 2 hands to operate it. I modified it the first day I got it by using super glue gel and a small wire nut to make a tiny knob on the wheel. It works smoothly now because this gives you plenty of leverage to crank it with a finger.
The tap function is nice, just tap the beat as you listen to a song and it computes what the tempo is. It also has a light corresponding to the beat, red on the 1 beat, then green 'til you get back to 1.
This unit may not be as portable as some but it will fit in my guitar case pocket. This is not a concern as I just got it to use at home. The unit can also emit reference pitch tones for tuning or ear training.
If it holds up, I will be satisfied now that it has been "customized". As I say, I would rate it higher if not for the control wheel design.

Where To Buy The Zen of Screaming: Vocal Instruction for a New Breed
This is pretty awful. As far as the regular technique, it looks like Melissa is better than the average voice teacher, but certainly nowhere near the best in the world, and if you're buying a home product, you can just get the best instead of this. At least she's telling you to breath in through your nose and she's not telling you to raise your soft palate like some teachers, esp classical, but she's emphasizing breathing way too much and wants you to push from the gut like a bad classical voice teacher. If you raise your shoulders when you breathe, maybe her classical technique section will help you... that is if you can get passed her home made cutesy names alla Phoebe from "Friends." Phoebe tried to teach guitar and calls an F cord "old lady" etc... Melissa has so many comical names "Rotunda" breathing, a "by the way" catch breath, etc... All of it is imagery based teaching on the off chance that when you think of the same thing she's thinking of you'll do what she's doing... instead of actually training your muscles to do what she's doing without the intermediate step. She actually makes people bite pencils to get better placement. It's comical. All of that is pretty common among voice teachers, though, and is her teaching at best. At worst she encourages you to scream on pitches to build compression on high notes, which of course if you actually do you'll hurt yourself bad, but if you can match what she's doing (without any explanation other than the demonstration) you'll sing in a good balanced mix and then leave with the idea that that's what it means to "scream" on a pitch. The next 20 minutes are all telling you not to push to hard, so maybe it's ok to use the word "scream" like that.
If you don't want to spend much money, don't buy this, buy Seth Rigg's "Singing for the Stars." If you don't mind spending quite a bit buy Brett Manning's "Singing Success" and/or "Mastering Mix," both expensive programs, both worth every penny. These are three of the best home vocal programs in the world... when you can get that, why buy this?
As far as the actual false cord death metal 'scream' technique this product is hyped as covering, there really isn't much here. I don't know much about false cord technique except Tuvan throat singing which is very healthy for your voice, just keep the constriction above your vocal cords and not right on them. If it makes you want to cough, you're squeezing too low, stop, and see if you can make the false cord sound while maintaining an open, unhindered true tone underneath. I checked out this DVD to learn more about false cord singing and I know nothing more about it now than I did ... it feels like at least 3 hours ago but it can't have really been that long or it wouldn't all fit on the DVD!
For death metal screams you might try something like Cathrin Sadolin's "Complete Vocal Technique" home program, which has been recommended to me. I've ordered and it hasn't arrived yet. It looks much better than this, though, like it actually tells you how do these death metal vocals safely, rather than just wanting you to experiment until you find the way that doesn't hurt. I feel bad promoting a product I haven't yet sampled, but I don't want to simply say this is bad without recommending an alternative. Cathrin's program *has* to be better than this waste of time and money. Try that or get a good vocal coach who's familiar with the kind of death metal vocals you want to learn. If you try to learn death metal vocals just from this DVD, you could be wandering around in the dark hurting your voice for months before you stumble upon a healthy coordination.Get more detail about The Zen of Screaming: Vocal Instruction for a New Breed.

Dunlop Standard Tortex Picks, 12 Pack, Blue, 1.00mm Review
So interesting story about these picks--the first time I used them, I didn't like them. They kept slipping out of my hands. It drove me crazy. I eventually went back to my old fender picks that I was used to. After trying these months later, I realized that I wasn't holding the pick the right way. This product is excellent. I had been learning to play the guitar for about a year using just the book (purchased at my teachers music store). Buying Alfred's Basic Piano Library: Prep Course Lesson Book Level B
I currently have some of my students on this level, and others on the regular beginner levels. I love how all of the different levels are interchangeable, so gifted students can advance more quickly, and students who need a little extra reinforcement can stay on the lower levels. Purchase Regina Spektor - Far (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook)
I am always afraid to buy popular music books online, because it seems that often times either they are too simple or too adapted to sound like the vocal melody and not the music melody. This book is a great blend of the piano and the vocal melodies. It is true to the actual recordings of the song so it doesn't sound hollow. For better or for worse, the vocal melody is infused into the two staff transcription (instead of adding a third staff). I think it was done well, keeping enough of the actual piano, yet bringing in the vocal melody so that it doesn't require singing to sound complete. I am very satisfied with this book!Get more detail about Regina Spektor - Far (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook).

The stand seems a better design and sturdier than the Yamaha Z stand for just a few dollars more. I am sure the Yamaha stand would have been fine for my wife's P-85. I do not regret this purchase as both stands were almost identical in price. If she wants, my wife could add a second keyboard to this stand with the appropriate bracket and never worry about it. The stand that arrived at our house has an extra piece of metal (compared to the one pictured) connecting the two horizontal pieces, making it even stronger. Setup was not difficult.Get more detail about On Stage KS7350 Pro Heavy Duty Folding Z Keyboard Stand.
Where To Buy Practical Theory Complete: A Self-Instruction Music Theory Course
Definitely a great beginning music theory book for teens through adults. It's a workbook format, and goes from drawing a grand staff through understanding the circle of fifths, Major/minor keys through basic harmony, rhythm and more. It's useful to have a piano around, but it is not required. I was given this book when I took beginning theory in high school, and am now using it to teach theory to my high school-age daughter. It is, however, straight-forward and understandable enough for most people to self-study, like the subtitle says. I had to take beginning theory in my first year of college for credit, and after having already learned basic theory with this book, I couldn't understand why the professor insisted on teaching the subject in such a rote, uninteresting manner. He didn't appreciate my asking him. This book is simple, direct and fun.Get more detail about Practical Theory Complete: A Self-Instruction Music Theory Course.

Shop For Music Reading for Guitar (The Complete Method)
i'll first say that i'm 33 and am an experienced guitarist - i'm also a good chord chart reader and alright rhythm chart reader. i bought three books all at the same time to help me with my sheet music reading insecurities: Guitar Fretboard Workbook by Barrett Tagliarino, Guitar Reading Workbook by Barrett Tagliarino and this one. And actually I lucked out! Each of them progressively lead you into the next (sort of). The Guitar Fretboard Workbook was good for identifying note names on the fretboard, then the Guitar Reading Workbook was more of a beginner's guide to the world of reading music (for the guitarist), lastly this one give's you the more in-depth exercises without going overboard too fast. I know some music theory/reading books start off at a slow pace in the first 5 pages then slam with you with things above and beyond what you even want to learn. I would recommend this book as it starts off easy for beginners and moves slowly forward with good exercises and "real" musical excerpts/arrangements to play.
For guitar I see reading music split into two different disciplines: Knowing to read the notes on the staff, and knowing where the notes are on the strings of the guitar. My point is, on say the piano, there's only one key on the keyboard that'll play the note you're looking at on the sheet music, while on the guitar you could possibly have 4 different options to play the same note (of course you'd have to take into consideration the technical feasibility of playing the note). So, as someone who's *very* proficient playing guitar (20 years in fact), I'd recommend even to get a supplementary book like the Guitar Fretboard Workbook to help you with being able to identify where the notes are on the strings, and this book here to help you put the two disciplines together.
Hope this helps!Get more detail about Music Reading for Guitar (The Complete Method).
The Advancing Guitarist (Reference)
"The Advancing Guitarist" is a good book as a reference tool; however, as stated in other reviews here, it is not a technique book or song book. It does offer some good ideas, and most are worthy of mention but much of the text is devoted to the philosophical underpinning of the author which is loose but disciplined at the same time. In other words, it is contradictory. I have found that learning the guitar (as well as teaching) through songs is by far the best way. While I don't want to sound elititarian here, songs have stood the test of time, culture, story, and theory. They also develop the ear. Playing around with scales and modes in all positions, up and down the neck, up and down individual strings, etc... is fine and good, but without the SONG none of it matters and the listener is left hearing a fine guitarist without any clue as to what is going on. For that matter, the guitarist may not even have a clue other than the fact that he/she can move around on the fretboard. Trust me - I know the fretboard - I have studied it through and through, but it is meaningless unless there is a listener who actually cares and then only if the music generates some level of emotion. 3 stars for creativity.Get more detail about The Advancing Guitarist (Reference).
Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson (Guitar Book) Review
I bought this book for my father-in-law who is just starting off on the bass guiter. My father-in-law is one of those men who has everything and is very hard to buy gifts for... Well this book was a hit. He loved the gift and even mentioned he was planning on buying it himself. The book not only has the autobiography in it, but includes sheet music and 2 CD's.Get more detail about Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson (Guitar Book).

Stainless Steel Deluxe Guitar Capo Get it now!
The capo is nicely constructed. But it does not do what it claims. "No retuning necessary" is the motto, and unfortunately that's not true.
When moving up the frets, the e strings especially go sharp. But I can't afford something fancier, so I've kept it.Get more detail about Stainless Steel Deluxe Guitar Capo.
