This is an excellent songbook to get. Contrary to the previous reviewer I believe the majority of these transcriptions are accurate. As with a lot of Jazz and Blues transcriptions you cannot document the 'feel' that Professor Longhair had. The book I have certainly includes some of his solos and some of the pieces are instrumental without lyrics.

His style is a mixture of Blues/Boogie-Woogie/Rumba/Samba all mixed up together. I was shocked to find largely positive reviews of this product. Since by criticizing it, I am contradicting other reviewers fairly directly, let me just explain my level of qualification: my bachelor's degree is in piano performance, and my master's degree is in piano pedagogy and performance. I am a private piano instructor and college music professor.

I can say without hesitation that there is no worse edition of the Mozart sonatas currently in print. This is true for several reasons:

1. The fingerings added here do more harm than good; my piano professor used to joke that Schirmer's editors were secretly hand surgeons trying to drum up their business by injuring pianists through repetitive motion in cramped positions. When one of my students brings in a Schirmer edition, I usually black out more of the fingerings than I keep.

2. The dynamic markings and articulations added to this edition reflect nineteenth century performance practice, and ignore more than a century of scholarship.

3. I find textual interference to be a bad idea in general, and recommend purchasing an Urtext edition instead. Henle or Wiener Urtext is hard to surpass; additionally, Kalmus/WB publishes a quite inexpensive edition. If, however, you dislike Urtext editions and want more guidance as to how to play the pieces, this is still not the edition for you. Buy the Alfred's edition instead, which at least gives decent advice (why pay for BAD advice from Schirmer?) and distinguishes between what the composer wrote and what the editor added.

4. Wrong notes. Lots of them, all through the sonatas.

5. The numbering system used for this edition is a version of the Koechel Verzeichnis seventy years obsolete.

6. VERY poor print quality. This edition is not even a new engraving; in addition to the overall lightness of print, there are frequent flyspots which contribute to the general illegibility.

Yamaha FC5MM Sustain Pedal for Keyboards Right now

To make the sustain pedal Yamaha FC4 work with a Casio wk-1630 keyboard. I bought mine on Saturday just before closing, and needed it to work on Sunday morning. As stated in other reviews, the polarity is opposite for a casio and a yamaha pedal. If in a jam, like I was, and a little handy, here is my soulution: First of all, don't unsolder and switch the wires to the internal switch; it doesn't change the effect at all, so don't waste your time. The actual problem is that the internal switch is an "always-on" switch that is interupted by the pedal action; what you have to do is turn this internal switch into an "always-off" switch that activates or connects the switch by the action of the pedal. Please read all instructions before you begin! This is my fix:
1) remove rubber backing on pedal. 2) remove screw holding switch to pedal. 3) pry contacts gently apart so that the switch contacts don't automaticly contact each other by spring action. 4)Tricky part: gently bend contacts using a needle noze pliar and a steak knife to arch contact while bending tip toward other contact. The finished product should result in contacts close, but not touching, which can be pressed together, but spring apart when let go. 4) Move white plastic cylindrical shaped block from one side of contact to the flip side, using a solder gun to remove and melt to reset. The goal is to make switch fit pedal upside down from it's factory position.
5)Reinsert switch upside down using screw to secure. You may need to loosen mechanical catch on cord to get some slack. 6) Test pedal to see if pedal depresses white block to cause switch to make contact, and adjust if necessary. 7) Replace rubber base and enjoy!Get more detail about Yamaha FC5MM Sustain Pedal for Keyboards.

There is only 1 note in the text, the bass clef "e." You use the exercises in the book to develop your sense of pulse and sub-division of the beat.

I had 2 degrees and a teaching certificate in music before I ever found this book. By the time I'd finished the first 14 pages, my understanding and ability to play time was virtualy mastered.

The magic of this book is the hidden organization. I learned in education classes the value of "sequential learning" and "one complexity at a time." This book applies those principles in a masterful way. Every possible placement of quarter notes and rests are explored, line by line, in a sequential fashion. (Rest on beat 2, rest on beat 3, rest on beat 4, rest on beat 1, then 2 rests, 3 rests and so on.)

After quarter notes, the same thing is done with eighths and sixteenths, including ties. Dotted rhythms are explored. By the time you've finished the section, you have encountered every single possible rhythm.
